Over the next few weeks, I got used to the fact that any time I got with Cassidy outside of work was likely to be last minute. She seemed incapable of committing to anything in advance. Some Sundays she showed up at my door, some she didn’t, and I assumed she was at church. She came over at least one night a week, but she always slipped out before morning even though she had always left for work from my place before.

I found out about her dad through Julia and wondered why she hadn’t told me herself. She slid her eyes away when I asked her about it, the way she always did when I brushed too close to whatever it was that she wasn’t ready to tell me. I tried not to push, but every time I swallowed back frustration, it settled in the pit of my stomach as suspicion.

Even though I knew it was a risk, I got Red Sox tickets for her birthday. Seats that put us a couple of rows behind home plate. Still, even as her eyes lit up, I saw her lip pull back into her teeth. A sure sign she was trying to figure out if she would be able to go.

I was getting sick of that look.

I met the others at The Banshee that night. Thanks to Julia, everyone knew that I was sleeping with an employee who’d bailed on the company once. Bryant kept his mouth shut most of the time. Colt made a few comments, but it was Zane who really had the problem with it. He was convinced she was spying for the other company.

“We’re going to look like complete assholes,” he warned me. “We’re a security company and you’re sleeping with a security risk.”

“Was she excited about the game?” Sasha asked, putting a warning hand on her fiancé’s arm.

“Fucking thrilled,” I muttered, disgusted with the whole situation.

Sasha and Julia traded looks but didn’t say anything.

“She said she couldn’t go, didn’t she?” Zane asked bluntly.

“No.” I took a drink of my beer. Clapped it back down on the table a little too hard.

“She said she couldn’t go,” Zane said to Colt and Bryant in disbelief. “Fucking third row, right behind home base, and she isn’t going.”

“She didn’t say that,” I said loudly.

What she’d said was that she was pretty sure she could go, she just had to check a few things.

Family stuff.

“Fire her,” Julia offered, but her voice didn’t have the same conviction as it once did. She liked Cass too much. They were becoming friends.

I glared at Bryant. “I already took this fucker’s advice and forgave her. Look where it got me.”

“Don’t blame Bryant because you’re a dumbass,” Zane said before Bryant could defend himself. “You’re the one who chose getting some action over getting the truth.”

“Yeah,” Bryant said, raising his glass to Zane. “What he said.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Julia elbow Colt. He jolted and looked at her questioningly. She jerked her head in my direction.
